Rate-Distortion Optimized Bit Allocation for Error-Resilient Transcoding

چکیده
A key issue in video transcoding for transmission in an error-prone environment is to balance the rate used for the video source with bits allocated for error resilience such that the end-toend distortion is minimized under the given rate constraint and channel condition. The approach presented in this paper differs from previous works by accounting for the inter-frame dependence in both video source requantization and error propagation of motion compensated video. Based on the rate-distortion models developed in this paper, an optimal Group-of-Picture based bit allocation scheme is proposed. We also propose a sub-optimal scheme that is suitable for a real-time implementation. Both the optimal and the suboptimal scheme achieve better PSNR performance than the fixed heuristic bit allocation scheme. An R-D optimized transcoding resilient motion vector selection
Selection of motion vector (MV) has a significant impact on the quality of an encoded, and particularly a transcoded video, in terms of rate-distortion (R-D) performance. The conventional motion estimation process, in most existing video encoders, ignores the rate of residuals by utilizing rate and distortion of motion compensation step. This approach implies that the selected MV depends on the...

Video transcoding is a key technology to support video communications over heterogeneous networks. Although quite a bit of research effort has been made in video transcoding due to its wide applications, most video transcoding techniques proposed in the literature are optimized based on the simple Mean Squared Error (MSE) metric which does not correlate well with the human visual perception. In...
متن کاملCoding mode optimization for MPEG-2 transcoding with spatial resolution reduction
This paper presents a coding mode decision algorithm for MPEG-2 spatial transcoding. The optimization for coding mode and quantization scale are formulated in an operational rate distortion sense and solved by Lagarange multiplier method. The experimental results show that the proposed transcoder with optimized coding mode and quantizer can achieve better quality and lower bit rate than those o...
متن کاملReal Time Transcoding using Fast Requantization Codebook for Vector Quantization
Requantization of pre-compressed multimedia is a popular method for reducing the bit rate of a previously compressed data. The need for bit-rate reduction of the data stream, known as transcoding, requires adjustment of the transmission of bit-rate according to the bandwidth of the available channels. This introduces distortion of the reconstructed data. For real time applications the transcodi...
متن کاملA novel frame-level bit allocation based on two-pass video encoding for low bit rate video streaming applications
Current rate control schemes in video coding standards do not have efficient framelevel bit allocation due to the limitation of real-time encoding. In this paper, by taking advantage of offline video encoding, we proposed a frame-level bit allocation scheme based on a latest developed rate-distortion (R-D) model, the ρ-domain R-D model [1], for low bit rate streaming applications. Specifically,...
